The Lion King 3D - in theaters for 2 weeks beginning September 16th for JUST 2 WEEKS and then on video October 4

I haven’t decided if I’m going to go to the theater to see the special limited engagement of  “The Lion King 3D” which starts  September 16, 2011.  It will play for just 2 short weeks in select theaters and then be released on home video October 4th.

It’s not because I don’t love “The Lion King” movie; I do.  And it’s not because I don’t love 3D; I do.  It’s because I don’t know if I can watch it without sobbing.  Heck, I can’t even write this post without tearing up.  The story is a great one but I saw it the first time with my then adorable 6-year old snuggled up in my lap and his 8-year old brother sitting on the edge of his seat next to us.  As we settled in with kid-size popcorn and drinks we were excited.  Excited because we’d seen “The Circle of Life” used as a preview at previous movies and it was amazing.

As the lights dimmed and the music started neither of them moved.  The both were enthralled with the music, the characters, and the jokes.  Oh how they loved the jokes and the often repeated them for years after, especially the naughtier ones Pumba told which made for some cringe-worthy times with grandparents.

Even in the theater that day I cried when Simba grew up.  I knew it woudn’t be long before my boys did to. Explaining my tears to the kids that day opened up all kinds of dialog about getting older, growing up, and what families are about.  And that’s why I love Disney movies.

So now all these years later my oldest is 25 and busy with his own life.  The youngest is 23 and living in Mississippi while he does an internship and here I am, crying about a movie that happened years ago.  I guess that’s the beauty and power of a great movie and I count “The Lion King” among some of the best.  Thank you Disney for being a part of our family’s history.

So if you go to the theater and see a slightly older woman (who am I kidding – a much older woman) sitting by herself with tears streaming down her face, don’t laugh at her or feel sorry for her.  Smile because she’s remembering some really great times and someday hopefully you’ll be lucky enough that woman will be you.
