School has started in much of the US and with the start of school comes the added chore of packing your child’s lunch. It’s tough enough when you kids can and will eat anything, but if your child has allergies, is finicky, or is intolerant of some foods it can down right be frustrating.
It’s estimated that 1 in 10 children are lactose intolerant. “Many parents may not recognize the symptoms of lactose intolerance in their kids, often mistaking digestive complaints as illness or stress-related or food avoidance as their kids ‘being picky,’” says Ashley Koff, R.D., celebrity dietician and author of a new book Mom Energy.
Here are five signs Koff says could denote that a child is lactose intolerant:
- Digestive complaints, especially gas, bloating and belly aches
- Avoiding or refusing dairy when offered
- Frequent loose stools
- Bad breath despite proper dental care
- Body odor that isn’t explained by normal activities (i.e., played sports or forgot to shower)
“If you suspect your child is lactose intolerant, you should talk to your pediatrician before making any dietary changes for a complete evaluation,” Koff adds. Should you find out your child is lactose intolerant don’t panic. There are tons of great dairy options available that are lactose-free and gluten free and many are available at your local grocery store. Even more like lactose free yogurt, kefir and sour cream, can be found at health food type store like whole foods.
Need some easy meal tips to enjoy the health benefits of real dairy but with without the lactose? Visit the Lactose Free Green Valley Organics Product webpage and also find out more about their organic and cruelty-free products. Also check out Redwood Hill Farm, which has been the best-selling goat yogurt in the U.S. since its introduction in the mid-80’s. It’s now made with organic fruit at no extra cost. Redwood Hill specializes in goat products including artisan goat cheese and goat yogurt.
“This is something consumers have been asking for and we’re thrilled to offer our delicious goat yogurts, now made with organic fruit, at no additional cost,” said Redwood Hill Farm Owner Jennifer Bice. “To celebrate, we’re rolling out our first major product line redesign in over 10 years. It’s a bright new look that focuses on our commitment to use only the highest quality ingredients, starting with 100 percent fresh goat milk, for which we pay the highest price in the industry, and now the addition of premium priced organic fruits giving consumers something truly special.”
Redwood Hill Farm and Green Valley Organics are both refreshing their product lines and putting out new packaging, but both still offer quality, organic products you can count on. Green Valley Organics offers a delicious line of yogurts, kefirs, and new sour cream . Green Valley Organics produces yogurts and kefirs that deliver millions of “good-for-you probiotics” in every bite or sip.
But how do they taste? The Green Valley Organics is divine and it disappeared quickly. It had just the right amount of sweetness to fruit tartness and a smooth and creamy consistency. The Redwood Hill Farm goat products were tangy, which I’ve read is common with goat products. While they weren’t to my taste, I can see children brought up on goats milk liking them just fine. And the Kefir, a new drink for me that’s said to be very beneficial, was great. It has a thick chocolate milk-like texture that was improved even more by blending it with ice. Kefier is a fermented drink to which lactose-free milk has been added. It can be used the same way milk can – on cereal, in a hot drink, in recipes, etc. It’s rich in probiotics and on its own is a bit sour, so fruit or fruit juice is generally added. It’s these probiotics that keep your gut flourishing in the good bacteria and thus healthier.
So whether it’s you or your child that’s lactose intolerant, or you just want to be sure your gut is healthy, check out the quality products from Redwood Hill Farm and Green Valley Organics.
