I’m turning 50 this year and as I count down the remaining months, I’ve been noticing how my body is changing as well.  Within the last few years I’ve gained weight faster and easier then ever and my body shape has changed.  I now carry more weight in my upper belly area, a place I’ve never carried weight before.  I’m also well into peri-menopause and on my way to menopause.

I first discovered I’d begun my journey about 3 years ago.  I started getting blinding migraines.  It wasn’t long before I realized they coincided with my menstrual period.  I’ve also begun having incredibly long periods.  What used to take one day, now goes on for five, and they’re brutal.  I also suffer from joint pain.  But, it’s not that bad. I’m lucky that I’ve never had a hot flash.  It’s probably because I’m a vegetarian and eat a lot of soy.  Whatever the reason, I’d be thrilled to never have one.

I have had a night sweats a few times and found that pajamas that “wick” away the moisture are fabulous.  Two-piece sets are best because I can change the top if need be and head right back to bed.  The first few times it happened it was a bit unnerving, but now that I know what it is, I just do some relaxation breathing and go back to sleep.

I’m determined to go through this change of life as naturally as possible and with a positive mindset.  I take vitamins, eat whole foods and organic as much as possible, and have started exercising.  There are days when the headache and other symptoms get me down, but I’m lucky that I work for myself and can take it easy those days. I’m looking forward to making my way completely to the other side and hope it happens soon.  I’m embracing menopause and am ready to move on with my life!
