General Mills has released special retro boxes of cereal in Target stores again! The five limited-edition General Mills Big G cereal boxes feature fun “Retro” package designs and cartoons from the 50s, 60s and 80s.  But this year, General Mills let the consumer pick their favorite and here’s how you voted!  The top packages chosen include Cheerios® (1956), Trix® (1968), Honey Nut Cheerios® (1984), Cinnamon Toast Crunch® (1984) and Lucky Charms® (1989).

We’re also running the same contest at Princess Time Toys, so enter often! The new retro packages are only available while supplies last or until mid-March at Target Stores nationwide.  Also, check out retro cartoons at http://www.grocerysavvy.com/ – you’ll find “Dennis the Menace”, “Tennessee Tuxedo”, “The Underdog Show”, and the “King Leonard Show”. It’s hard to believe shows I grew up loving are now considered retro!

This week we’re highlighting the 1984- Honey Nut Cheerios & Cinnamon Toast Crunch boxes! I was a newly wed in 1984 and we were listening to “When Doves Cry” by Prince.  Gasp!  I hate to admit that now.  It’s also the year the Space Shuttle Discovery took her maiden voyage.  We were glued to the TV in awe.  We also voted to put Ronald Reagan in office but I suspect I voted for Walter Mondale.

In technology, it’s the year the Apple Macintosh was introduced and yes, I worked on one. 🙂 We were wearing stonewashed jeans (with skinny legs finally after years of bell bottoms) and The Cosby Show became on of the hottest shows on TV.  That was the same year Vanessa Williams became the first African-American Miss America – a huge deal back then and Mary Lou Retton won my heart with her Olympic performances – she was so tiny and perky!  She ended up winning two gold, two silver, and two bronze medals.

We also started thinking about adding children to our family so 1984 was a pivotal year for us! Crazy times and so long ago.  That baby we were thinking about it now 25 and we’re celebrating our 27th year of marriage this year.  The 80’s were pretty good to us.
