My babies loved to be swaddled. Swaddling babies goes back to ancient times. Many babies are soothed and quieted by being swaddled and some even sleep better – I know mine did for the first 6 months or so.
Back in the day (ie., mid-80’s), there weren’t special blankets or swaddling sleepers, we used standard baby blankets. They worked, but because they weren’t designed to stay tight, the baby eventually wiggled himself free. Many times in the middle of the night resulting in them waking up because they were cold or missed the tightness of the wrap.
Now there are many choices and many different ways to swaddle your baby. I’m old school and frugal, so swaddling blankets look like a great option. One because they’re have a bit of a stretch to them so they swaddle brilliantly, and two, because they’re not swaddling specific, their shape is usable in more ways. I’d use one as a breast feeding cover-up, a traditional blanket, a stroller blanket, etc. A swaddling designed blanket just couldn’t be used so many different ways.
I received a lovely swaddling blanket from Luna Lullaby. Named The Soothing Blanket, it’s designed for versatility and comfort. I received a beautiful cream swaddler which I don’t find on their site any longer. What I do find there is a great selection of colors and prints and most importantly, and organic version. My personal preference for babies is to go organic and wash them in organic soap.
The blankets sell for a very reasonable $14 for a single blanket and $34 for a set of 3. The Organic option sells at the same price point as the standard single blankets which is fabulous!
The blankets are deliciously lightweight so their perfect year round and can be layered with additional blankets or clothing, but their perfect alone in the spring or summer. The size is a generous 44″ x 44″ so you’ll be able to swaddle a newborn to 6 month old easily with the same blanket. The fabric is soft and comfortable and appears to be well-made and durable.
Luna Lullaby also carries Bosom Baby and Bounce-a-Bye Baby. The first is a great nursing pillow to aid you in positioning your baby perfectly for the most comfortable breast feeding possible. It can also be used to position the baby for interaction and play time. The Bounce a Bye Baby is a exercise ball that does double duty as a baby (with mom) bouncer. What a fabulous idea.
I’ll be gifting this swaddling blanket to my nephew who’s wife is having their first child, a boy. This new little bundle of joy, due any day, will be the only male in our family to carry on my maiden name (well, unless more boys are in my nephew’s future!). We’re thrilled to have our name carried on and this will make a fabulous gift.
Learning to swaddle your baby with a swaddling blanket does take some practice. Luckily, most hospitals teach you the swaddling method before you leave, but if you need a refresher, or you’d like to try the technique, here’s a great video that shows you exactly how to wrap your baby. Luna Lullaby provides a DVD with the purchase of The Soothing Swaddle Blanket so if you give it as a gift, the receiver will have all the information she needs to be successful.
