Preorder Norah Jones Featuring at Amazon.com

“…Featuring” by Norah Jones was a complete surprise. I’m sure I’ve likely heard some of her work before, but I’ve not been a fan so I knew little of her.  Yes, I know she’s sold 40 million albums and won 9 Grammys.  When I got the chance to review her new CD, I did because I figured I’d either hate it, or find a new artist to love.  It was definitely the later for me.

I’ll admit, the first song, “Love Me” with The Little Willies was not my favorite. In fact, I was afraid it was a precursor to the rest to come.  Thankfully, I was wrong.  The next song features the Foo Fighters, one of my favs, on “Virginia Moon“.  I LOVED it!  There are several standouts on this CD.  Willie Nelson lends his iconic voice to one of my favorite songs of all times, “Baby It’s Cold Outside“.  His gruff voice mixed with her smooth as silk voice is such a treat.

“A lot of the people on this record are people I’ve worshiped since I was a kid, and some of them are younger and more my contemporaries,” says Norah. “Even though the musicians are so varied, the vibe of the songs makes sense when we put them all together.” – Norah Jones

I didn’t even mind that the CD was all over the place musically.  Country, Hip Hop, Rap, and Pop all live together comfortably here.  And yes, although I’m not usually a country fan, the country-laden tracks were some of my favorite. Who doesn’t love Dolly Parton?  Another country icon.  On this CD she joins Norah on “Creepin’ In“.   I also really enjoyed “Life is Better” with Q-tip and the very soulful and sexy “Soon the New Day” with Talib Kweli.

There’s so much to love on this CD that I don’t mind the first track as much anymore. Heck, I may even have started to like it.
