So you know I’ve seen Disney’s “Secretariat” and loved it. If not, you can read my review, Disney Tells Penny’s Story Beautifully in Secretariat, to find out why this movie touched me. Since seeing the film, I’ve been looking for info on Penny and Big Red online, and I thought I’d share some statistics about this fabulous horse I’ve found.

I LOVE horses and secretariat is my favorite horse of all!
I am now 62 years old and am NOT, nor have I ever been, a horse racing fan.
With that said, however, I must admit that in 1972-73, Secretariat totally captured my imagination and also my heart and soul forever, starting with his winning “Horse of the Year” honors. I don’t know how or why this happened, but I am so glad it did. After watching DISNEY’s movie about this fantastic horse, many memories flooded back about the times and about events in my own life that I had completely forgotten about. Most of all, I remember the incredible thrill of watching “Big Red” totally destroy the field, especially his main competitor, Sham, who, in his own right, was one of the greatest horses of all time as his record proves. Unfortunately Sham came up at the wrong time…the Time when the Greatest Race Horse that ever lived won the Triple Crown….”Big Red” aka “Secretariat”.
KUDOS to Disney for a fine movie shot in spectacular fashion, which made me feel like I was one of the jockeys riding these incredible animals….wonderful
footage re-creating a race that was run 37+ years ago. “Secretariat” brought horse racing to the level of a major sport for ALL the people, not just the elite or the gambling fringe. His time in the derby and the Belmont still stand today….what a legacy!!
@Tom Porucznik,
Thanks for the comment! The movie brought back great memories of that time for me as well.
Sincerely,
Connie
