Working together makes great food and lasting memories
Jamie’s Revolution may have finished on TV, but you can start your own food revolution right at home. Say no to processed food and cook fast and healthier food at home. Jamie makes it easy with recipes that are family-friendly and he’s provided videos for many of them as well.
Get your kids cooking, too. Not just evening meals, but have them make their school lunches. There’s so much an elementary school student can learn by finding recipes online, and then with your help, making them for lunch. You’ll be able to discuss nutrition, measuring, weights, food storage and safety, and more. It’s a great learning opportunity!
Check into freezer cooking, also called once a month cooking (oamc), for lunch ideas you can make one day a week, or one day a month, and then the job isn’t a daily chore – here are a few links to get you started:
- Peanut Butter Granola Sandwiches – Made with peanut butter, granola, and flour tortillas – up the quality by using natural peanut butter and organic tortillas
- Tex-Mex Pita Sandwich – This is an easy, vegetarian sandwich made with pita bread – organic and natural food makes for a quality lunch product.
- Mini Hero Sandwich – Layers of your child’s favorite deli meat and cheese on a hot dog bun — make sure to choose natural and organic products. Look for cheese that’s made from milk that doesn’t contain hormones – I’m a fan of Tillamook Cheeses. They’re not organic, but they meet all of my other criteria. Choose the meat carefully – there are new less-processed meats available with less salt and fewer additives.
- Skip the sugared drinks – Capri Sun, juice boxes, etc., that have high-fructose corn syrup and the like. Pack a thermos with real juice, or better yet, water!
- Lots more are available here
My personal revolution is actually working. My husband, who thought the whole green moment was silly, now reads labels and shops organic. My mother, also a critic, is becoming more interested since the organic hand lotion is doing for her what steroids the Dr prescribed was supposed to do. I’ve got her thinking about what she’s putting into her body as well as the chemicals she’s using in her home. Today we talked about why a 25lb bag of bleached white flour is no deal when compared to a $9, 5lb bag of organic wheat flour. Baby steps!
