Brian at 2 sharing his favorite toy with his new baby brother

Sharing. We teach our kids about sharing almost from birth. They have to share us with their siblings. They’re taught they must share their toys with friends. And they’re told they must share their love with others. Teaching kids is easiest if we model the behavior we expect from them. By being generous and sharing our time, efforts, and deeds, kids will see that we are all connected and can make a difference.

With my own children we reminded them from day one that they were brothers, that they would always be brothers, and that when we are gone they’ll only have each other. We taught them one way to show love was to share and be kind and that included how they talked to and about each other.

Sure, there were many years that we wondered if they were hearing our message. The teen years when they picked on each other and we thought they’d never be friends. The years where they took very different paths and seemed to have so little in common.

My boys are adults now and they’re still very different men, but they are kind and considerate towards each other. Yes, they’re brothers and they joke and kid, but if one needed the other, I’m confident he’d be there for him.

I don’t regret spending time teaching my kids our values – it’s time well spent and I see how they fit into the world and I’m pretty proud.
