I finally got a chance to locate the Sargento® Ultra Thin Cheese at my local store (sadly my preferred grocer, Amazon Fresh, isn’t carrying this new line of cheese). I purchased a package of Sargento® Ultra Thin Sliced Mild Cheddar Cheese and because time was short and the weather hot, I wanted something fast and easy and something that didn’t require cooking. I was inspired by Sargento’s Veggie, Cheddar and Hummus sandwich. You can find this recipe along with many other main dishes, breakfast items, lunch and snack recipes as well at their website.
Since I’m probably the only vegetarian on the planet who does not like the taste of hummus, that was the first thing to get substituted – I opted for some honey mustard instead. I would have like to have picked up some sun dried tomatoes in oil, but I opted for fresh tomatoes in their place. To that I added pickles, cucumbers, and one slice of Sargento® Ultra Thin Sliced Mild Cheddar Cheese. I wrapped it all up in a thin “everything” bagel; which is my bagel of choice.
The sandwich is easily assembled, can be made ahead, travels well, and has just about 150 calories total and it’s delicious! The new thinner slices make melting easier (I like what I call toaster grilled cheese – toast two pieces of bread, top each with a slice of cheese, stack them together, wait on minute and eat!) and they shave off the calories while still giving you plenty of cheesy taste.
Of course, you’ll pay a premium for sliced cheese but there are benefits. For me it’s about portion control – having the cheese already portioned for me saves me from cutting a slice which may be much larger than a portion size should be. I’m OK with paying for this convenience.
