The Travel Channel's Anthony Bourdain No Reservations is available on DVDWe’ve partnered with Anthony Bourdain, chef, author and television host to provide 5 travel hints and tips that will help you make the best of any trip and avoid travel nightmares. Anthony hosts the wildly popular Travel Channel’s “No Reservations” TV show where he travels the world spending time with the locals and sharing their stories as well as their food.

It’s a program about more than food, although food is the central character in every episode; however, he also shares local lore, history, and more.  The show has him traveling to remote and unique locations like Kurdistan, and eating exotic foods that are well, disgusting but always authentic.

Here are our Anthony Bourdain-inspired top 5 travel tips:

  1. Eat like a local. Find out what the area is known for and search that out. Avoid using the hotel’s concierge for dining tips. A concierge is in the business of finding spots tourists will enjoy, you want to find the spot that locals enjoy, where you can enjoy authentic cuisine from the region you’re visiting.
  2. Show your appreciation for the food, especially if dining abroad. Smile and look happy even if you don’ t like it. If you don’t speak the language, use gestures that show you appreciate their effort.
  3. Get up early and visit the local markets or central food market. You’ll be dipping right into the middle of the culture and the local cuisine. Check out the food stalls that generally are available at any market for ready-made foods.
  4. Be prepared. Keep snacks and water on hand and activities to keep you and your traveling partners entertained. Make sure you have a battery charger or extra batteries for any devices you may be using.
  5. Dress comfortably whenever you travel. Pack something long-sleeved and bulky like a sweatshirt in a handy spot like your carry-on bag or backpack. It can keep you warm or double as a pillow.
