As part of the Disney/Dreamworks Event I’ll be attending in just a few weeks, I’ll be seeing a sneak preview of “The Help“.  I heard about “The Help” when is was on the New York Times’ best seller list and was intrigued. So I went online to my local library’s download site and added it to my library audiobook waitlist and forgot about it.  It became available for virtual checkout while I was at Walt Disney World and I didn’t download it in time and my checkout time expired.

Some of the women who’ll be going told me the book was fabulous and I should read it before we go. So I went back to the online library to download it, but drat, there’s still a waiting list for it.  Now I have a deadline and need it asap, so I hopped over to Amazon and ordered it with 2-day delivery, and today I received the CDs!  I prefer audiobooks to PDF or e-books and will probably never own a Kindle, I spend too much time with a screen as it is.  I even prefer a real book rather than ebook, but my format of choice is an audiobook because I can listen while I work, while driving, and at bedtime as I’m waiting to drift off.

I’m in love.  The story is fabulous and the voices used to read it are phenomenal.  The book is written from the perspective of two of the characters – one white and the other black – and a different voice is used for each.  It adds so much to the story.  I can’t express enough how wonderful it is!  Get yourself the book or audiobook asap!

Still not sure if “The Help” is for you?  Check out the video clip by Mary J. Blige and find out what she thinks about the movie, what moved her, how she came to write the song “The Living Proof” or it, and even hear a bit of the song in the clip.  It’s fabulous.  I’ve also included the official trailer below.  If you watch both of these and aren’t as excited to see it as I am, well then, bummer!  Because I’m beside myself waiting to see  how the book turns out…so you’ll excuse me if I go back to listening now….

The song, “The Living Proof,” was written and recorded by Blige especially for THE HELP after she saw a screening of the film, which takes place in 1960s-era Mississippi and chronicles the journey of three very different women who come together and embark on a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. “The beautiful thing about these women is that they were very smart,” says Blige. “They chose to walk in love and forgiveness.”

ABOUT THE MOVIE:

Based on one of the most talked about books in years and a #1 New York Times best-selling phenomenon,  “The Help” stars Emma Stone (“Easy A”) as Skeeter, Academy Award®–nominated Viola Davis (“Doubt”) as Aibileen and Octavia Spencer as Minny—three very different, extraordinary women in Mississippi during the 1960s,  who build an unlikely friendship around a secret writing project that breaks societal rules and puts them all at risk. From their improbable alliance a remarkable sisterhood emerges, instilling all of them with the courage to transcend the lines that define them, and the realization that sometimes those lines are made to be crossed—even if it means bringing everyone in town face-to-face with the changing times. Deeply moving, filled with poignancy, humor and hope, “The Help” is a timeless and universal story about the ability to create change.

From DreamWorks Pictures and Participant Media, “The Help” is directed by Tate Taylor and produced by Brunson Green, Chris Columbus and Michael Barnathan, based on the novel by Kathryn Stockett, with screenplay by Tate Taylor. “The Help” releases in theaters August 12, 2011.
