My dogs have been eating Pedigree Dog Food for a week or so now. So far we’ve not noticed any problems – they’re having normal stools and they all seem to be digesting it well. I was worried at first that the little dogs might have trouble with the larger kibble (we’re feeding them the Adult Formula), but they’re able to eat it without any trouble.
They seem to like the taste fine and we’ve not had any trouble with them feeding, but I’m sure you’re wondering if it’s a healthy food for dogs. The answer isn’t easy; it depends on what you’re comparing it to. The food is not organic and it doesn’t list meat as the main ingredient as most premium foods will. And even more controversial, it uses meat by-products (the bits and pieces including hooves, beaks, etc.) that are leftover after the rendering process. As a vegetarian, I find that unpalatable. It also uses artificial colors which is a shame because I doubt my dogs care that their kibble is multi-colored. Can you buy better? Sure. If your budget has room in it for a organic or meat-based food, buy it. You’ll likely save in vet visits and possibly have your pet around longer. If you budget doesn’t allow for a premium food, then this is a good one to check out.
Will I feed this to my dogs after the trial is over? Maybe. I’ll continue to monitor them on it and continue to look into the ingredients. Since we feed our dogs a lot of our “human” food, the amount of dog food they eat is pretty minuscule. I sort of look at it as a supplement to the wholesome food I feed them already so a small amount isn’t likely to harm them and they are getting vitamins C & E as well as Omega fatty acids from the food.
