Great tasting products that happen to be organicNewman’s Own Organics: The Second Generation

The “new” generation at Newman’s Own is run by Paul’s daughter, Nell Newman. It was Nell who convinced her famous father to establish the organic division of Newman’s Own.  It was her commitment to sustainable agriculture and organic foods that convinced her dad to try the first product – organic pretzels – that went on to become the best-selling organic pretzel on the market.

With the success of the pretzels, Nell suggested more of their natural products be converted to organic and that’s how the organic division was born. The products now are varied, but all are organic and sustainable.

Newman’s Own Organics
cookies are amazing
.  They come in several varieties of filling, with the same chocolate cookie.  But even better than their taste is the fact that Newman’s Own sources it chocolate from organic farmers in Central and South America who do not use forced labor.  I love that the company is socially responsible and therefore I’m doing my part to help by purchasing them.

In addition, growing the cocoa organically means farming the old way. No plowing down ancient rain forests and destroying natural habitat.  This is a gentler way of farming, using small farmers, and encouraging environmental responsibility.  I love that.

Click to Find out more about Oregon Tilth Certified Organic Certification

Like their other products, Newman-O’s are certified organic by Oregon Tilth. To qualify, ingredients have to have been grown without the use of artificial pesticides or synthetic chemicals for three years or more.  Each farm or processor is verified and certified by Oregon Tilth,an independent 3rd party. Oregon Tilth examines the farm or processors documentation and test random samples of the product to verify they are truly organic.

Not only is Newman’s Own a socially responsible company, they have my health at heart as well. They use organic palm fruit oil instead of palm kernel oil which is widely used in processed foods. Organic palm fruit oil is not hydrogenated, contains no trans-fatty acids, and is lower in saturated fat than butter and has no cholesterol.  It’s widely used in Europe and is extracted from the palm’s fruit, not the palm’s kernel.  Of the three tropical oils, palm fruit oil is 50% saturated, while palm kernel oil is 86%, and coconut oil is 92%.

Newman’s Own produces a wide-variety of products including pop corn, dressings, cookies, pet food, and more. These cookies can be found in natural food stores as well as large retailers like Albertsons. You can also purchase them online – Amazon has several retailers that sell them in bulk which greatly reduces the cost.  The cost is $2.99 to $5.49.  Check out the Newman’s Own Organics site for coupons.
